What is IRC (Internet Relay Chat)?
IRC is a multi-user, multi-channel real-time communication system. It is a magical place where many users from all parts of the world can communicate with one another either in groups or private chats.
Getting on IRC is relatively easy. Are you ready to connect? Here we go...
Where do I connect to?
We are on the EFnet IRC Network.
How do I get onto EFnet?
You need to download and install an IRC client on your machine (see below). Once installed, you have to connect to an EFnet server.
You can alternatively use your web browser with the SEO Chat IRC Network Gateway to get on the EFnet IRC Network without an IRC client. Just enter a nickname, and click the chat now button.
Which EFnet server do I use?
Any. They all connect you to the main network. Some clients have a built-in list of servers it can connect to on EFnet. "irc.efnet.org" is an example of an EFnet server. See server information list for a suitable server to your location (Note: connecting to a closer server may be more beneficial in terms of connection speed)
I'm connected! Now what?
We are on the 'SEO' (without quotes) channel. Some clients may require you to enter '#SEO' (without quotes but with the hash character) instead.
Great, but how much does it cost?
Nothing. It is free to connect and participate in any community (channel).
If you are new to the whole scene, don't panic, and there are tons of help available. Here are a few suggestions:
- Like the rest of the Internet, you are responsible for the information you provide. In other words, don't provide any vital information about you or whatever you are involved in to anyone you do not know.
- Familiarize yourself with your IRC client of choice for commands.
- Follow good etiquette and our channel rules for an easy participation.
Common IRC clients:
- Windows: mIRC
- Unix: XChat
- Apple: XChat Aqua
- ChatZilla extension for Mozilla/Firefox
- Opera has a built-in IRC client

One more question!
You ran out of questions unfortunately. Get in there and participate in the community. Enjoy! :)
